EDM superfans: digital platforms are redefining music engagement

EDM and other genres, such as K-pop, J-pop, and Afrobeats, lead engagement, reflecting a transformation not only in music consumption but also in monetization strategies for artists and record labels. The data comes from the Luminate Midyear Music Report 2025.

On communication platforms and social networks, consumption patterns reveal important nuances. On Discord, fans of J-pop, K-pop, and EDM stand out for watching short music clips and are 200% more likely to tip artists compared to the average U.S. listener. On Reddit, the most engaged genres are K-pop, EDM, and Afrobeats/J-pop, with users particularly enjoying vinyl records and showing an 83% higher likelihood of financially supporting artists.

Twitch shows a similar profile, with fans of J-pop, K-pop, and Afrobeats consuming short clips and being 150% more likely to tip artists. Meanwhile, on WhatsApp, Afrobeats, Latin, and K-pop lead engagement, with fans preferring online and digital radio and being 67% more likely to financially support artists. In 2025, WhatsApp launched new features, including the ability to add music to status updates, further increasing interaction between artists and audiences.
